Plansee is the second largest lake in Tyrol and a truly magical place surrounded by breathtaking beauty.

The clear, turquoise water of Lake Plansee is ideal for swimming, diving and water sports. Dive into the refreshing waters or explore the underwater world on a dive. The lake is known for its excellent water quality and offers optimal conditions for water sports activities.

Eibsee

Surrounded by majestic mountains and dense forests, the Eibsee offers a backdrop straight out of a picture book. Dive into the refreshing waters of the lake or explore the picturesque surroundings with a stroll along the shore. The Eibsee is a true paradise for nature and outdoor enthusiasts.

There are also smaller lakes and bodies of water directly in Saulgrub, which you can reach on foot from the Gasthof zur Post. Worth mentioning, for example, is the Scheibum, a rocky breakthrough in the Ammer, where you can refresh yourself in summer. The brave ones even jump from the rocks a few meters into the cooling water of the Ammer.

The deep lake is located in the middle of the forest and can also be reached on foot from the Gasthof zur Post. A beautiful natural idyll!

Lake Bayersoien, about 5 minutes away by car, also invites you to linger on beautiful summer days!

Hiking

Whether you are an experienced hiker or are just starting to discover the joys of hiking, Saulgrub and the surrounding area has something to offer for everyone. From gentle walks along picturesque alpine meadows to challenging summit tours, you will find a variety of hiking trails here that will lead you through impressive nature.

The climb to Hörnle is suitable for hikers of all levels of difficulty. The well-signposted hiking trail leads through dense forests and over green alpine meadows as you slowly gain altitude. Along the way you will always be rewarded with spectacular views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Once you reach the top, a breathtaking panorama awaits you. Enjoy the view of the surrounding peaks of the Ammergau Alps and the rolling hills of the Alpine foothills. On clear days the view even extends to the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain.

A popular hiking trail is the Kofelrundweg, which takes you on a panoramic tour around the impressive Kofelberg. Enjoy the breathtaking view of the Ammertal and the surrounding mountain landscape.

If you’re looking for a more challenging challenge, you can do the Laber climb. From there you have a spectacular view of the Ammertal and the surrounding peaks. Or explore Pürschling, an impressive mountain that rewards hikers with its spectacular views and rocky peaks.

The Ammergau Alps meditation path takes you from the Wieskirche in Steingaden to Linderhof Castle in the Graswangtal. On a total of 85 km of hiking trails you will experience 15 cultural sights and places of natural power.

Biking

The region offers a variety of cycle paths and routes suitable for both recreational and experienced cyclists.

Whether you are looking for relaxed bike tours along the river valleys or challenging mountain bike routes in the mountains – you will definitely find what you are looking for here. The well-signposted cycle paths take you through picturesque villages, past lush meadows, deep forests and majestic mountain backdrops.

In Oberammergau, we recommend a trip along the Ammer cycle path, which takes you along the idyllic Ammertal. Enjoy the tranquil atmosphere as you cycle along the river and admire the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

For mountain bike enthusiasts, the region offers numerous trails and routes that will challenge you and test your riding skills. Explore the paths of the Wank Mountain in Garmisch or venture onto the routes in the Ester Mountains. The breathtaking views and adrenaline rush make mountain biking in this area an unforgettable experience.

Culture

The Oberammergau Passion Play is a unique cultural event that dates back to 1634. Originally staged as a vow to overcome a plague epidemic, the games have since been performed every ten years.

A wide variety of performances also take place in the Oberammergau Passion Theater outside of the 10-year cycle. Inquire directly on the homepage.

The Wieskirche, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, officially the pilgrimage church of the Scourged Savior on the Wies, is an architectural masterpiece and an outstanding example of the Bavarian Rococo style. If you like hiking, you can even walk to the Wieskirche from the Gasthof zur Post in just over two hours.

When it comes to culture, Saulgrub is also an ideal base for exploring the surrounding attractions. Visit the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, just a short drive away, or discover the region’s rich history at the Glentleiten Open Air Museum.

A stroll through the beautiful artists’ town of Murnau is a highlight whatever the weather!

Skiing and cross-country skiing

Saulgrub is in close proximity to the Zugspitze massif and the Ammergau Alps, meaning you have a variety of ski resorts to choose from. The Garmisch Classic ski area, just a short drive away, offers an impressive variety of slopes for skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

The Kolbensattel ski area in Oberammergau is ideal for families and beginners. There are wide slopes and practice areas to learn or improve skiing in a relaxed atmosphere.

The Hörnle in Bad Kohlgrub, just a stone’s throw from the Gasthof zur Post, is a wonderful destination for skiers of all levels. This small but charming ski area lies amidst the breathtaking landscape of the Ammergau Alps and offers great opportunities for an unforgettable day on the slopes.

The Oberammergau region offers a well-developed network of cross-country ski trails for cross-country skiers. The trails lead through picturesque valleys, snow-covered forests and past impressive mountain panoramas.
